Reflection: Legal, Ethical, and Societal Issues in Media and Information Literacy

In this activity I am reminded on the basic rules when doing business regarding artist’s copyright, digital divide, netiquette, and guidelines for regulating internet cafes near schools. I realized that these are fundamental to achieve fairness and honesty in innovating media and information literacy. For my group we are assigned to make netiquette rules for our school and with that we created the “Ten Netiquettes” that all of us must follow. I think that the most important lesson that may leave in all of us is that we should never use the internet to abuse the rights of other people and that we should do our best to attain its purpose which is to communicate genuine information to help others. In doing this activity as well, each member got the chance to give their own insights through collaboration with the group in having an excellent performance.

Thing/topic I enjoyed and why? Thing/topic I learned and why? Thing/topic I find challenging and why? Thing/topic I want to learn more and why?
The thing that I enjoyed was the fact that we present this activity in a very creative way wherein we made everyone enjoy at the same time learn about the lesson. I already know the lessons that were presented although in this activity it refreshes my knowledge about those. I find making the rules for the internet café challenging for the decision was up to the owner of the establishment and further negotiations are still needed to accomplish that. I want to learn more about digital divide since we are already in an era where it is really happening, in that case I may understand more how big the impact of media to everybody.

TV Commercial Analysis: Kwentong Jollibee “Vow”

1.     What codes are used in the TV advertisement?

The different types of codes are shown in the television advertisement as for Technical Codes it shows the different techniques in various scenes like for example the shot on the altar it appears to be the one that is narrating is the one getting married. Then for Symbolic Codes it uses Jollibee itself as the connection and struggles between the two people acting on the TV advertisement. Lastly, Written Codes although it cannot be seen physically on the TV advertisement it is still present on how the characters spoke from ordering to the cashier up to narrating the whole short film.

2.    How were the codes used in constructing the message of this TV advertisement?

Codes were mixed to one another to achieve a perfect television advertisement. It makes every project more exciting by balancing literal meanings to symbolic meanings.

3.    What genre in this TV advertisement? What made you think so?

I think that the genre of the television advertisement is hopeless romantic because it only showcases the one-sided feelings of the boy to his bestfriend which unfortunately is getting married.

4.    Why do you think particular TV advertisement went viral?

Television advertisements went viral because the general masses relate to the emotions or situations the advertisement is giving. For instance, in the “Vow” many would feel the same way with the boy who loves somebody but doesn’t reciprocate his feelings.

Reflection: The Truman Show

The film “The Truman Show” directed by Peter Weir in 1998 is an excellent avenue to show how media affects one’s life. The story revolves on the protagonist Truman Burbank who lives in a simple town called Seahaven. He has a simple life with a beautiful wife and stable source of income. The story changes when he started to discover that something is wrong with his life as to the people in his neighborhood seems to know him. At the end of the film he successfully leaves the town knowing that everything that he has is fake even his family and friends.

I think that this film successfully relates the lesson that we are discussing in Media and Information Literacy as it shows the variety types of media and how it affects different people with their lives. First of all, the film itself is a type of media whose information successfully leaves its audiences a special place in their hearts. Part of the film shows how people patronage print media through newspapers. Broadcast media was also present in the film as Truman keep track on radio when he goes to work every day and watches television programs once he gets home. And just like Truman it is up to us if we will believe on what the media gives us or we will be critic of the information given by different types of media. The life of Truman was manipulated by a film director; he was surrounded by thousands of cameras but he successfully dominates it and freed himself from this.

I think that the film wants to leave a message to their audiences by being aware of the world as media can be manipulative sometimes. At the end of the day it is us who controls and choose what we kind of media we will create.

Also, being a critical thinker makes it easier for the students to grasp and analyze the different lessons which is the root of different skills like proper communication skills and problem-solving skills.

Examples of different fallacies:

EFFECTS OF MEDIA TO YOUTH

Media is all around us it can be seen in different places in various forms. From television advertisement, billboards, magazines even in our cellphone applications, media is becoming the way to give everyone a hint on how our world goes especially to the youth of today. One of the most frequent place where youth spend most of their time is on the internet as everything can be done on this broad place.  A study conducted this year in the United States shows that 98% of the youth age group is using the internet. It can be shown that different types of media on the internet is continuing to be part of our lives. Knowing that internet is just beside us it helps us do various tasks like looking for credible references for your research, accessible transaction to countless stores and establishments, connect with our friends and love ones and many more advantages. Despite of these advantages, it also has disadvantages like it may affect he behavior of the youth causing addiction and depression. Media can bring both positive and negative effects to everyone especially on youth. It is up to us on the extent on how we are going to use this, we can ask ourselves what our purpose in using the internet to avoid abusing it.

Don’t HIDE, be REAL.

Our digital poster is inspired by the application on the internet curious cat where different people can ask or tell somebody anything without being identified. It may sound exhilarating but the truth is it is becoming a way to bully (cyberbully) someone on the internet. A bully can say different curse words that may degrade someone who may cause him/her to suffer. This poster suggests to stop the hate and to stop hiding from the reality. Speak up and be yourself, be real, be honest. In coming up with this poster we considered the various design elements and principles, such as text and visual design elements and principles.

Fake News in PH

According to the Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released last June 12 of the same year 67 percent of the filipino respondents see fake news as a serious problem. Philippines is one of the countries with highest number of internet users.  With everything that happens in our country each day, fake news can be a part of our lives but that doesn’t mean it will be endlessly because nothing lasts forever in this world.

The advancement of technology gives us a lot of benefits on different aspects of every individual. It is also a main factor of development in various settings such as in business, education, health care and many more. But, it should not limit us to look only on the positive side because it has always a negative consequence. For example, technology helps us to see the world by exposing us to different types of growing media but then exposing us to extensive media can also increase the risk of exposing to fake news.

Fake news can be anywhere but being a media and information literate can possibly solve this problem. Maybe not instantly but with the help of everybody fake news will never be a problem. We just need to consider some things such as: Who is the sender of this information?, Why was this information sent?, What is the relevance of the information?, Is it reliable?, What could be the possible interpretations of this information?. With these simple questions we can start empowering ourselves in becoming a media and information literate so that we can properly evaluate and produce information.

As Colin Powell once said “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” We filipino citizens must always be responsible on every post, like, comment and share that we do over the internet. We must be aware of the fake news that spread with just a glimpse and we will open our eyes to see the reality.

BLOG #4 Teacher’s Day

Some people say schools are overrated well I say it’s not. School is one the places we’ve all experienced, it is where we play with our friends when we are in kindergarten, when we started to make friends when we are in elementary and when we finally know who we are in high school. And since today is Teacher’s Day I would like to make an appreciation blog for one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, a mother of 35 curie 11 students and the best adviser for life. She once said “You cannot control others but you can only control yourself” giving us advice every day when we feel tired, sick, sad or happy even the times when we are fulminating about the other toot. You are always there for us and we are very grateful to have you.

2

And so I’d like to thank you Ma’am Sheryl Verdadero for being our mother and I hope that you don’t get tired of us because no matter what happens you’ll be our best teacher. From the one and only pogi:
